The following lesson is an idea I plan to try in a second grade classroom:
Using my new friend "Twitter," I will find another second grade teacher from another state who is willing to work collaboratively to bring our classrooms together on a project. Students in each classroom will be paired together to create an animal report using online research and Google Slides. Once the slideshows are created, the students will use the desktop function on Screencastify to record a verbal report, while showing their slideshow on the computer. The videos will be sent to the teacher in the other classroom to be shown to his or her students. Videos created by the other teacher's students will come to me to be shown in my classroom. Students will write a positive comment about each report they watch and the comments will be sent to the students who completed the report. Once everyone has had an opportunity to see the comments on their videos, students will have the chance to edit or review their reports. To take this activity to the next level, once the reports are edited, they will be posted as a blog post for others to comment on. To boost the amount of comments, I will go back to my friend "Twitter" for assistance.
I believe that this lesson falls under "modification" in its early stages. In a typical classroom setting, students would likely go to the library and get a book on an animal. They would then make a poster or write a hand-written report on the animal and share the report in front of their own class. By providing technology and allowing the students to collaborate on the animal report, they are already doing something different. In furthering the assignment to include creating video report, the scope of the assignment is changed. I believe the project moves into "redefinition" when it is shared online and students receive comments on the work they did.
Kristin,
ReplyDeleteI love the way you are implementing a peer-edit session into this project. I was so excited to see that you will encourage your students to make comments on others' projects so that each student can strive for improvement and mastery. Such a great idea!

ReplyDeleteKristin,
ReplyDeleteI love your ideas! I definitely agree that your video report with comments is in the redefinition category. I think that is great to have the students paired up with someone from a different state to work on their reports! That makes it so much more engaging for students and teaches them how to collaborate with each other. I think this is something that I could try to replicate in my second grade class as well!
