Day #2 Reflection of Technology in Education Course

Wow, I just experienced one of the best classes I have ever taken. It was mind blowing. There are so many positive aspects of using technology in education and before this class I was actually somewhat close minded to the idea. I am most excited about using different tools for videos in my teaching. I plan to record myself teaching so that my students can "take me home" and review topics we have covered. I also plan to have my students record themselves. Using Screencastify was a great. I plan to have the students record themselves replying to prompts where they have approximately 1 minute to answer. This will be fun as well as help me gauge what understanding they have of a specific topic. I also want to have them research a topic and teach the class about it in a video. That video could then be posted online so that the students can watch them outside of class time and write a response. Through experience I have learned that if you teach on a topic you grasp the content better that by listening or reading alone. Having my students "teach" each other in this way will be fun and hopefully they will be able to learn the content more fully as well.

By using many of the tools we have learned about, the classroom can literally be redefined. No longer are we stuck between four walls. We can collaborate and connect with students and other teachers around the globe. I look forward to being in my own classroom and having the resources to reach out. I hope to do multiple projects with my students where we collaborate with other biology classes throughout the world.

  1. Auna,

I think that you have an awesome new perspective of technology use in the classroom! I think that your students will appreciate the video lessons you will make for them, and I think that being able to watch them at home will enhance their learning. I also agree that having students record themselves will demonstrate to you and to themselves what they really know. You have a great outlook on the way technology can modify and redesign the classroom. I hope that you are able to link your biology classes with others throughout the world because that would give them a different perspective of the information.

  3. Auna,
I agree with you about this class being a bit mind-blowing! Your idea about having students explain the material to each other through video forms is such a wonderful idea - I think I may steal it from you! Like you said, it is so helpful to really understanding information when you are able to explain the concept to someone else. Additionally, letting students learn from one another would potentially be a really cool way to engage them in learning and make things more interesting for them.

  4. Spend some time searching YouTube for teachers who are creating these videos to get some examples. Check out my friend Jason Welker and his YouTube channel. https://www.youtube.com/c/jasonwelker every year he gets emails from students around the world thanking him for his videos. He creates them for his class but look at those views! Kids all over the world watch his videos to pass economics in their schools. He basically names the school he wants to work at!
