Using technology in SAMR model
Teaching younger kids i want to have them become invested in Wikipedia. We will do this on the kids version but I want them to learn to make edits and information to the website. I didn't know that this was possible before Thursday. I thought only certain people could contribute to that site. This is such a great project because it uses the Modification aspect of SAMR. The kiddos do a group project on a dinosaur assigned to them. They compile all the information google docs so they can work together on the same document. They have to collaborate in person as well as online. Then once they get all their information the last step of the project is to review the kids wiki page for that dinosaur to see if they found information that isn't on the site.I want them to go to the talk side of the page to see what edits they have talked about and see if any updates are needed. The kiddos could try and find the updated information to make their mark on Wikipedia. Even if the wiki page has all the information they gathered they still did the work and it reinforces how amazing wikipedia is. To finalize the project I will email some dinosaur experts all over the world and see if a few would skye with us. We could ask them live questions about these dinosaurs. So within this single project we would use google docs, wikipedia and Skype to build a great rounded view of these dinosaurs. What an amazing world we live in!!

Chris - What a cool idea! I like the aspect of having students contribute to a wiki page. Like you said, they still are doing the work and learning, but they also get the opportunity to share that work with the world. I think that is a great motivator to get students to do quality work. I also like the idea of having experts Skype your class to have a real-time conversation with your students. Using those technologies to expand our students learning world is a great way to enhance our students learning experience.
ReplyDeleteHow cool! Having an expert Skype with me back in the day when I was learning about dinosaurs would have been the best class ever! I love that this is a possiblity for us to use when we are teachers.
ReplyDeleteHey Chris!
ReplyDeleteI love your idea about having an expert on Dinosaurs Skype in with your classroom. In our classrooms, we the teachers are looked at as the "experts" but in reality there are so many ways we can take our lessons out into the world and have outside "experts" come into our classrooms and share what they know. I think your students will really benefit from this creativity!
