As a millenial, I fit in with the majority of the population that has become dependent upon my cell phone. I recently realized this trend, so I made an effort to use my phone less. This process was extremely difficult for me, I quickly realized how much time I spent on my phone and how boring waiting in line is when you don't stare at that tiny glowing screen. After much practice and effort, I am becoming more comfortable being independent of my phone. As much as I would love to live in the woods and never see a phone line again, I know how important being social is.
I have been told that social media wasn't created solely to post your political views and dank memes, but it was actually a tool made for being social. This revolutionary discovery taught me that the tiny glowing screens aren't hypnosis machines from the government, but actually a great way to be social. When used appropriately, social media can connect you to incredible resources. Your friends all have connections, and they all have knowledge, but you don't get to see all your friends everyday. Despite this, you can still use these resources without even having to buy them dinner and have awkward small talk. All you have to do is follow them on social media and engage in their online presence. Just by checking your social media a few minutes a week, you can see incredible resources for work, for family, and even for fun. The key to social media is knowing how to use it. If you become a slave to it, then you will mindlessly scroll for hours, but if you search for insightful tid bits, you can grow, learn, and even spend less time with that tiny glowing screen.
