Misconceptions about the Internet in a Classroom
Social Media can connect people from around the world and provide new perspectives. I love the idea that one can find a teacher or someone from around the world to talk to students. I also love that you can learn about other teachers are working on to teach to the common core standards. Connecting with other people can be extremely helpful.
Along those lines, a google search can also be a great way to learn a new perspective if you search for information from other countries. This is something new that I learned today is how to find sources from other countries' government and their sources. This would have been extremely helpful to know for college especially in my developing economics courses and even my political science classes since the best, unbiased information about government comes from other countries. This will be helpful being a social studies teacher since it is also fun and interesting to learn from other perspectives other than just the US.
I also learned a lot about Wikipedia. When I do some sort of research I always start there, but I knew it may not always be reliable. However, the links cited in Wikipedia are usually helpful. Today, I learned beyond those links and how to tell how reliable a Wikipedia page actually is. There are so many fun ways to incorporate tech in the classroom,. I loved the idea from my professor today about having kids edit low-level Wikipedia pages as a way to practice their editing skills.
Technology and the internet can really help teachers to meet the students where they are and to communicate in a way that they like best.

I agree with you about the Google search feature from different countries and states. It will be so helpful with social studies especially! I imagine you were thinking about contacts you have in Italy or San Fran and other places in the world that you could incorporate into future lessons via Skype. I was doing the same thing :) Honestly, a lot of what you pulled out of the learning is the same as what I was thinking. These are great, practical skills that will be useful to students and applicable to their real world learning, which is so important.
