Video calls with professionals in the industry could be one way that teachers can integrate professionals into the classroom. One of the top difficulties teachers face within STEM education is the lack of opportunities to collaborate with STEM experts in
the classroom. As someone who wants to teach math in ways that are practical, applicable, interesting, and engaging (and possibly Computer Science), I think it is crucial that we bring the real world into the classroom. Video calls with people in the industry where they talk about what they use in the work setting would be helpful to show students how what they are learning is applied. Especially within the newer field of Computer Science, this would be particularly helpful in generating interest whether it is catered to females in CS, ethnic minorities in CS, or just generating interest in general. Video calls create opportunities that are convenient and engaging where you can reach out to people all over the world. Tech is awesome!!!!!! The world is at our fingertips! #WWMIT
Great post Lily! I totally agree! Tech is awesome! As a fellow future teacher in STEM, it is so important to inspire students (especially those underrepresented) to pursue a career in STEM. How cool would a Skype chat with Bill Gates be? Using simple resource like Skype could actually connect our classes with real scientists. I look forward to pushing students of STEM into the future of technology along other great STEM teachers.
