During our first technology in education class I feel like I learned so many tools that I have ideas about (and am excited to) implement into the classroom. Potentially most of our class will end up using these tools at some time in their teaching career, to the point where our professor may look like the guy portrayed in the photo above. In turn once we use these tools in our classroom our students will learn how to use technology in a constructive and educational manner to the point that we might also be as excited as the man in the photo above. Either way I am about to mention the tools that I found to be most exciting to learn about today and how I might use them in the future. First, we went over collaborative note taking on google docs, which I appreciated the idea for elementary school students to have their own cells and take notes on their questions and wonders during videos. This is especially good because you have access as a teacher, so you can see their history on the doc and you can assess any misconceptions that need to be addressed or questions that require immediate answer. Then another thing we went over that blew my mind was when we learned all of the google tricks, I felt like I had learned so many different research tactics that I can create as projects and pass onto my students. For example, looking up one topic in multiple perspectives of the different states, countries, and even time periods! One of my favorite pieces of today was exploring the site with all of the old newspapers from all over the world, that is something I can use in my class as well in so many ways (research, thematic unit, math, advertisements, etc). Lastly, I learned how to use Wikipedia as a reliable resource (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Content_assessment). This concept I can use to help teach my kids how to find good sources, but I also liked the idea of using them to help build Wikipedia's less fully formed sites. I am planning on taking these tools and passing them on to my future classes and coworkers.
Great blog post Sabrina! For collaborative note taking, I will you use that for lower grades such as 2nd grade? Do you think there is a way to do this for grades that aren't great at taking notes on google docs? I too enjoyed the old newspapers. I can just imagine how mind blown our students will be when we show them this. Great idea, we should pass these insights to our co-workers.
