Connecting the Dots with Connectivism

The future is technological, and the only way to keep up is with Connectivism.  As BCcampus points out in the attached link, this theory does not assign a role of teachers and students in the process of knowledge.  Although this makes the roles less clear and more difficult for teachers to decipher, I think it is very intentional.  In connectivism, there is no assumption that one node of knowledge is greater or more important than another.  Simply, every node is connected in the network.  Teachers and students are both nodes that are connected to help serve the purpose of being included in the overall knowledge base.  As every teacher has ever said, they learn from their students.  This may be the most cliche of all teacher cliches, but this theory further exemplifies this truth.  Teachers are paid to teach students, and they cannot be a part of the collective connective knowledge base without networking with the students and connecting to the their knowledge.  This theory is definitely pushing society into the new digital world.  The schools are moving with the digital world, but they are not quite keeping up.  The ISTE standards show that subjects need to be utilizing technology to keep up with the rapid progression.  Despite this, the standard appear to be falling short.  The standards do not include math.  WHY ISN'T MATH INCLUDED???  This is just outright outrageous.  Did the fire alarm go off before math was addressed at the meeting and they decided to just call it good after that?  What the heck?  ANYWAYS...  Another interesting aspect I noticed is there is no technology education in technology.  Connectivism speaks of educating for the purpose of knowing how to learn in the future.  Technology is the future.  We need to be educating the kids specifically in the content of technology.  This is what is going to move our culture into the future.  With the knowledge of our technology, kids can learn other content areas so much easier.  We need more focus on tech.
I appreciate the theory of connectivisim.  We still need some work to bring this theory into the light and further scrutinize it to ensure that it is going to carry us into the future, but it appears that it certainly is the theory of the future.
