I think the issue with math is the fact that there are a lot
of uncommon symbols that are affiliated with the math language and it is hard
to represent those symbols on technology. I believe that is why some of us math
teachers may struggle with incorporating technology with math. However, one
should not just look at the negative side of the technology. I believe that
using Flipgrade for math will help modify the way students are doing their math
homework. This is because not only are they just completing their assignment
but they will be explaining their thinking process as they are working on a
specific problem. This not only helps the student but it helps me by showing me
how the student is doing and it shows me if there is a specific part of the
lesson that I will need to go over again with the class. It shows me the progress
and growth the student will be experiencing as they get used to explaining
their thinking. This also modifies the way I am teaching since I am seeing the
students work on the problems individually and I will be able to know what each
student struggles with, if there is any.
Another idea is making videos for my students that has me
doing an example that is similar to the assigned homework. Providing these
videos will not only show how to do a specific problem but it will explain the
methods that lead me to the answer and the explanation why I got the answer
that I did. I believe that this redefines the way the students are learning
because not only they have me as a source during class time but they will also
have access to me outside of the classroom. Without technology, this would not
be possible. There are videos in YouTube that may or may not relate to the unit
that will be taught in my classroom and so by making these videos personal to
the classroom will hopeful be very beneficial for my future students.
I am seriously considering using Flipgrid in my classroom as well. It will largely come down to whether students in a middle school environment have the technology. I'm pretty sure there will be enough cell phones to do math movies though. That part I think will be exciting.
