Stone Age to Digital Age
Connectivism is understanding how to learn in the digital age. This is something that we should embrace as a culture. There are some forms of technology that can give students the confidence they need to share. For example, when we did fishbowl the group that was on the outside wasn’t able to talk and that gave the more introverted students an opportunity to communicate over a chatroom. This concerned me at first because I automatically thought, that students need to be able to share out loud because that is a skill they will need in the real world. Then Jeff clear it up and said to still use discussions, but also use chat rooms every once in a while so the more introverted students have their moment to shine.
I love the idea of connecting with other educators around the world over Skype or FaceTime. That would make such an impact on the students and it would be first hand learning from someone. When we are in our anatomy unit it would be a great opportunity to connect with an anatomy educator around the world.
Technology has been able to secure connections all over the world, giving students a variety of learning opportunities. Even within a P.E. class students can videotape themselves to watch their form and fix what is wrong. That is deep learning being able to watch your self and detect and correct errors.
Heres a youtube video on all the social media that can be used for digital learning.

Digital Diversity
In my future classroom, I would have students learn the content then have them create a video over that content and have them connect it to something they are passionate about. If each group has a different passion, but the same content then all of the videos will end up different. Creating videos or doing a type of project-based learning allows the students to be creative and take the content into their own hands. They become a short term teacher. I think this would be at the redefinition level because a new task is being created through technology. They are recreating the same content in a new way.
Lastly, talking about body image and all of the advertisements in the world was intriguing because that comes hand and hand with my content area. This is a subject that I will have to continually cover and I want to make sure that it is not a one-time conversation. This is a subject that should be continually talked about because everywhere we look are advertisements and it hurts my heart that children are getting affected by this is younger and younger ages.
Hi Molly,
ReplyDeleteWow, I love all your thoughts on how to apply what we learned in class to health and PE. There are a ton of topics that can be covered in health especially that students might not be comfortable discussing in class, so I think your idea about using chatrooms would be very effective. It gives students a more protected environment to ask questions they might not be comfortable bringing up in class.
You have some amazing ideas and you future students are going to benefit greatly from them!
