Are we doing the most we can for our kids in the classroom? Can we expand their educational experience past the classroom? These questions can be answered by the teachers and administrators in the classroom through the SAMR model. The aims of this model is to have teacher provide lessons and activities that move students into the Modification and Redefinition level.
An idea of mine to move my students into the Redefinition level is to have my students complete a cooking show. There is so much chemistry in cooking and I will have my students think about how the chemistry ideas that have been learned in class relate to their cooking show. Through this cooking show, they will be able to collaborate with classmates and video their show for presentation. This presentation can then be placed on a student blog which will hopefully receive comments and feedback from people around the internet.
Not only will these students have an activity that will push their understanding when it comes to the content of the class, their understanding of technology will increase as well as their presence on the internet.
This is the future. We as educators need to accept change in order to provide children with the best instruction possible. These children will be a networked generation, so we better start instructing them on how to be properly networked!
Great course, the internet is not quite as scary!
David,
ReplyDeleteI think that the idea of the cooking show is brilliant, and a great way to educate whilst engage your students. I like the way you have mentioned integrating something as normal as this and putting your own technological spin on it
