· I really liked the idea of having my 2nd grade
students write Amazon book reviews instead of old school book reports. Each
child can choose the book that they want to read, read it, and then we will
have a lesson on how to write a review. I can give the students a guideline to
follow, but they will need to come up with a hook to persuade others to read
the book, and tell why it is a good book with a few examples to support their ideas.
Then they will publish their review on Amazon so that the world can see it and
then the public is able to critique the review by clicking if the review was
helpful to them. I think this is at the higher end of modification in the SAMR
model because instead of using pen and paper the students will be typing on a
computer, and then publishing on the internet, and then can check back to get
feedback from people from around the world. I don’t think that this would qualify
as a redefinition because there is not a way for the public to leave written
feedback to the student. Even at the modification level it would be a valuable
lesson, and the students would be engaged because their work is going to be
published, not just something to be graded by their teacher. I can’t wait to
try this when I have my own class!
Nicki - what a great way to engage students in a book report. I think that they might even produce a higher quality report using this method because they know it will be seen by the public. It teaches them to analyze information and produce a review like an old school book report, but goes one step further. Having them be able to write for a public audience and learn to upload their review online are important skills for students to have, especially in the tech age we live in now.
