Social Media: A tool for education

Social media can no longer be kept in the dark when it comes to education. It is too powerful of a tool to not utilize. Teachers have been discovering this and finding great ways to apply it to their classrooms. I was very impressed with the middle school teacher that used Instagram to help students become good writers. The idea behind the page is that students would post a picture and write about it to improve their writing skills. One of the posts that was shown to us by a middle school girl had a plethora of writing mistakes in it, the point of it is to practice. I love the heart behind meeting students where they are at in their worlds and in their interests. Good teachers across the United States are going to need to find ways to creatively incorporate Instagram, Twitter, and SnapChat into the classroom environment.

  1. I agree! Snapchat, twitter and Instagram would be an awesome tool, the tricky thing is using it correctly, but that is also part of the fun. Figuring out what works and what doesn't is part of being a good teacher so you don't just doing the wrong things over and over. Creativity can be hard to achieve, which is why the social media platform makes is rad for teachers to collaborate with.

  2. Parker, I had the same revelation! I could not imagine using Instagram for writing but it definitely worked in that classroom. One struggle I have is always thinking of all of these apps on my phone only, and I hate typing out long messages with my thumbs! But you don't have to! You can always log-in on your computer or write with voice recognition. I absolutely agree with you that we need to utilize these apps and meet the students in their worlds. Great post!
