Creating Global Students

Allowing students to use technology in the classroom is a great idea. It is important for students to realize, if they haven’t already that they are a part of a global network. By having students post to a blog or on twitter rather just turn in a paper to their teacher will help get the best out of a student. I know for me, if I am just handing someone a paper it may not be my best work, but if I am posting it online where anyone can look at it I am going to put my best effort into it. The idea from the ISTE standards of a global collaborator is important. I want to create a collaborative culture in the classroom, but why not create a globally collaborative culture in the classroom. It is important for students to realize that there are people in the world willing to help them. I loved the example Jeff gave in class where he had students video chat with people form the country they were studying. If that is not going to get students invested then I don’t know what will.

  1. You have a very good point that if I just turn in a paper it might not look the best, but if it is online I am going to put in a lot of effort. I think the idea of using a blog or twitter rather than paper will be a good idea.

  2. Sup, KK. I like the idea of video chatting with members of other cultures. It'd be interesting to spend time with students generating a list of good questions for students to ask to help structure the conversation. You could tag this into a lesson on what makes a good inquiry question to pursue. This way they're learning the rhetoric of inquiry as opposed to the material itself, pulling them out of the classroom and into the world of actual inquisitive thinking.
