ISTE Standards...Why?

Copy and paste that into your browser...then watch.

All done??? Good...

So, why do we as educators need to incorporate ISTE standards into the classroom? The video says it all. The world is changing right before our eyes. And there is nothing any of us...even Big Bear, can do to stop it. To me, this is not Rad, it's scary. So what do we do? We have to ensure our little ones are ready for this changing world. We have to guide them, even though we have no idea where we are going, to a world where they will have a successful place in society. We have to strengthen our teaching of the core standards with todays technology and constantly adapt to change. Like I said, EVERYTHING is changing...we must follow suit for our kids.

  1. I'm with you Wally. Technology can be either useful or dangerous depending on who is using it and for what. If we are to be educators who speak kids' language and are able to change lives, we have to teach them to be good digital citizens. Our ability to change lives may be limited by our ability to keep up with the change that is happening, as you say, adapt to that change in technology and exploit it for the benefit of the students.

  2. I think that while the world is changing, human nature is to improve and grow wherever possible. While we don't know what the future will hold, we know that there will be a future. That's why I think it's important to teach the virtues of curiosity.

  3. A little terrifying to know that we as elementary educators are on the list of jobs that could be easily replaced by technology. Great video Wally, I'm glad you shared this. Without knowing where specifically the future is going, I suspect all we can do is stay up to date with, and informed about, the technological advances as they come while incorporating the ISTE standards to the best of our abilities in our classroom. For older students (middle/high school), I would love to share this video and put this problem out for them to chew on to see what sort of solutions they may come up with for their own futures. It helps show students that this is not an isolated phenomenon, but something that will affect their, and future, generations first hand.

    1. Did not mean to delete that...whoops!

That is a very interesting take, Wally. Kudos on using CGP Grey video! It reminds of the the conversations we had during class. The future is scary! Also...ROBOTS! 😱

  5. Great point. I believe that students need a new set of skills. The robot maybe be able to make the car, but it can't design it. The machine doesn't understand what makes the car appealing to the buyer, either. Those are the skills that we need students to learn. Baxter maybe able to replicate what we do, but Big Bear is still needed to design and create the big picture Baxter can't imagine.
