Being able to connect with others is valuable part of the education system. Most people would agree with that statement but at the same time teachers have students do most of their work alone. Connectivism argues that learning happens through connections socially. As teachers we should build as many relationships with our students as possible. Students should also be given the opportunities to build relationships with their peers.
Students should be given plenty of opportunities to work and discuss material with their peers. If students have different opinions they can express that with their classmates and get to hear many different points of view. The students should also work alone and problem solve by themselves. Every profession is looking for people that can problem solve so as a teacher if i can find ways for my students to become problem solvers that could be beneficial for them. Most professions also require working with others so we should also have them do this in the classroom. In a collaborative classroom everyone feels comfortable to express their opinions and students have the ability to work together and solve problems.
Derek, I completely agree with everything you've said. We need our students to be problem solvers and also problem finders. Why not do that collaboratively and allow students to develop relationships throughout their learning instead of forcing them to learn alone.
