Power behind Storytelling

Words have power. Photos have power. Let us combine the two and create magic for our students.

Take a moment with this image.
How does this photo make you feel? Why?

When we combine a social media outlet that our students use often, like instagram, as a source of homework that can create pause, reflection, art, writing, and community building; we are connecting on a deeper level with our students. What happens when we take the time to connect with our students? Does it create better student engagement in the classroom? Does it help them find their voice and perhaps a passion in learning? These are all open-ended questions that require us as educators to pause and reflect our own methods in teaching. So why not use this in our classroom?

One of my greatest mentors always told me, "never teach, always learn." I have always noticed that our students have more to offer us at times than we can offer them. I wonder if our roles as educators is to not only be good role models but to offer our students a variety of doorways to self-discovery and creation by weaving the use of imagery through our lessons via social media.

Education is a chameleon; let us not shape our students to the rules but allow the rules to adapt to the students.

  1. I love your use of the photos to demonstrate the storytelling, your questions that coincide with them are powerfully thought-provoking! I agree that we learn just as much from our students as they do from us, and I think that as educators we should adapt to their learning styles in whatever form that takes. I really enjoy the quotes!

  2. I love that you pointed out our students have more to offer us at times than we have to offer them. That statement comes from a place of humility and trying to make connection. This comes back to notion that the first place to start is to listen, and then we can build from there.
