Google Tour Builder as Science and Social Studies!
One of the videos I watched was the use of Google Tour Builder from the SAMR project videos, and it really opened up the door for me. As a big fan of traveling, I am always looking for ways to incorporate maps and geography into lessons. I was thinking it would be cool to use the study of science, looking at the people who discovered different scientific theories. For instance, have the students research people like Isaac Newton, or Jane Goodall, and have them create a tour of where those people lived, traveled to and died. I think think that this lesson still needs a lot of work-shopping, such as what the students will need to know about different people at different ages, but the core idea is feasible. This reaches the level of Redefinition because Google Tour Building makes the project something completely different than what they would be able to without technology. For instance, without Google Tour Building they would have to use a physical map which does not have the same lesson, the students would not get the big picture of the size of the earth. I think this lesson would allow the students to explore the earth, as well as learn about the people who have changed our world.

Hi Matt,
ReplyDeleteYour idea on have the students do research on historic figures is really good! I like that you are giving the students the opportunity to teach themselves while you facilitate it. I think you are on the right track and its a great hands on idea for learning.
I love this idea Matt. Travel is a way of being connected with the rest of the world, getting new perspectives, ideas and getting out of our comfort zones. This can help put historical figures into context of the time and place where their ideas were formed, what caused them to be relevant and hopefully instill the love of travel in young people.
