My biggest takeaway from the first day of class was learning how to use site: in Google. I feel like for all of my life leading up to July 12, I only had access to a tiny fraction of the information available to me, and learning how to use Google effectively opened up the information door a little wider. I think it is unbelievably important to understand multiple sides to news stories and issues in the world, and the site: feature makes doing so way easier.
I think it is important, as teachers, to make sure that we are not just teaching our students one side of anything. We all have opinions, and it's easy to just want to share our opinions with our students, but we need to be giving them the tools to find information and form opinions on their own. As a future biology teacher, I especially thought using site: to look at the ways that different countries are tackling climate change was amazing. I also think the site: feature could be used in a biomed class to look at how other countries tackled COVID. In any content area, the site: feature on Google can vastly increase learning and broaden understanding both on the teacher's part and on the part of the students. I am excited to be able to share this new knowledge and use it in the classroom.
