Mindset of Modern Educators (Blog post 4)

We as educators need to accept that the world does not remain stagnant. The idea of a "canon" of knowledge is pervasive throughout our entire society: canon literature, canon history, even holding up English grammar as inflexible are different areas of knowledge that education very often holds to an unchanging standard. The world changes, so why should our mindset about education change as well?

If we as educators fail to accept that what worked in the past won't always work in the future, then we are doing our students a disservice. We need to actively participate in evolving the way we teach to fit our current world, and in today's day and age, that means including technology. We need to ask ourselves: what do the students of today need to know in order to be successful in the future. If we only teach them ways to be successful in the past, that serves no other purpose except to make things more comfortable for those of us unwilling to change. We need to be aware of the present day around us, and incorporate those elements into the learning of our students. We need to be open to change.
