Recalculating... make a U-turn

This idea of "Just in time" learning is really fascinating to me, and it makes perfect sense for this modern-day era. This is a very practical method to a degree, but I also wonder how effective this is for long-term knowledge retention. I am already guilty of this as well, if a friend ever asks me a question I don't know the answer to I will just look it up on the spot even if they could have easily looked it up themselves. Google has killed wonderment, but it has also negatively affected some skills such as memory and navigation skills. I find it quite hard to successfully retain the knowledge I have learned online in some form whether it be videos, articles, or websites. I can't even count how many times I've had to look up the same relatively basic soup recipe over the last two years I've been making it because I just can't seem to reliably remember all of the ingredients or steps. I didn't own any sort of GPS device in high school and I could still find my way around easy-peasy, while now I will without a doubt get hopelessly lost without using Waze or Maps unless I have driven that exact route at least four times while using a navigation system.

Ideally, our loss of these skills will never be a serious disadvantage because we will almost always have access to the internet to find us answers or routes home, except for when we don't. Losing service has always been an annoyance at the very least, but now I have begun to worry about just how useless and lost I will be if I suddenly lose my phone or there is a service blackout, and realizing that dependency is actually a little embarrassing. I really can't complain though because I will continue to rely on this magical little black portal to an entire universe of knowledge and resources, and I really am grateful every day to be alive during a time with so many possibilities now available with the tap of a button. I think it is just important to keep in mind how much we are willing to let ourselves rely on technology in our daily lives.
