Shared Notetaking! WOO!

When I first saw shared note-taking in this course a huge lightbulb went off in my head. As someone that greatly struggled to get my thoughts onto paper, note-taking was one of the biggest hurdles that I had to overcome. This hurdle caused me to miss out on a lot of the content and made it so I would either need to decide to engage with the material or take notes. Using shared notetaking in class would also help cultivate the community that I would want to have in my classroom.

One of the biggest concerns that I could see popping up with shared note-taking is that some students would be doing the brunt of the work while others are coasting. I think that the biggest piece to combating this concern is to explain to your class that they need to learn to their strengths. If students know that they learn better while taking notes, they should sign up more frequently to be note-takers. Using shared notetaking at the elementary level also would help students learn how to take notes and would allow the teacher to see any misconceptions that are showing up. Notetaking is a skill that students need to be proficient at and using collaborative notetaking will help develop that skill in a way that individual notetaking will not.
