With the crazy invention know as the internet, we as educators have been given some amazing resources to have our students explore. One of these amazing resources is known as the Google news archive search, which is full of old news articles, some even dating as far back as the early 1800s! This gives students a fun interactive look into the different aspects of these past times, and is a great resource for history teachers to use in the classroom.
Some of these different aspects of the newspaper that can be explored are the different use of language, the presence of biases, and the types of ads/cartoons. In the article posted above, we jump back to 1945 where the Chicago Cubs won the NL pennant. However, it would be cool to explore media within this newspaper that looks at WW2 propaganda, as well as the different ads of items being sold and how much they cost. I believe this gives students a great way to truly understand what is going on in a time period, and makes for a fun learning moment!
