We Should Be Teaching Foreign Languages in Elementary!

Foreign language should be provided as a class in United States Elementary schools to help us keep up with technological advances.

For the past 10 years I have worked for a company that has helped companies improve their AI (artificial intelligence).  The one lesson that I learned while working to improve AI for other corporations is that large companies such as Facebook, Instagram, and Google are looking to hire individuals that can speak more than one language and bilingual individuals are in high demand.

Artificial intelligence, particularly voice recognition is a large and ever-changing field with an abundance of jobs. Slang or popular words across languages is constantly changing, making voice recognition and ever changing and growing portion of the tech industry.

If we want our children to succeed in tech industry jobs, it’s imperative that we start teaching our children other languages besides English and start at a young age. There are thousands of jobs waiting to be filled by multilingual individuals and unfortunately graduates from the United States are at a huge disadvantage.

  1. Great insight, Kristin. The amount of languages spoken in the United States is growing at an astronomical rate. However, these citizens are largely immigrants and have not grown up in the United States education system. Many of these individuals even struggle with English as a second language. I think the earlier we start teaching our kids Spanish, French, and other languages the better. The world is rapidly shrinking and if we want to maintain a competitive workforce globally in tech and other industries educating and establishing bilingual individuals is of paramount importance. Thanks for your blog and sharing a real world application of the importance of bilingual individuals.
