We need to be moving away from the industrial revolution/factory model that we have been using and move towards a more information age concept. We have had the same schooling model since the first publicly funded school opened in 1635. Since then there has been little change to the model. We've moved from a one room school house with all ages to larger schools broken down by age, however the model has relatively been unchanged. Why do we still employ rote memorize of information that we can access easily and more quickly with the computer we have in our pocket?
Why do I have to remember exact dates when a timeline of events will do just as well? If I'm not stressed about remembering the dates accurately, that gives me more time to understand the event and relate it to current events and how this thing that happened 200 years ago is still relevant today.
We need to equip our students with critical thinking skills and the knowledge of how to ethically and morally navigate the technology that is coming out now and in the future. We need to raise innovators to help solve climate crises that prior generations have created. We need to educate policy makers, humanitarians, and ambassadors to help the global population at large and ease the suffering of those who are being persecuted.
