I have never been a big twitter
user, even though I have had an account for years. I did not know how it operated and I didn’t
want to spend the time learning how to navigate yet another social media
platform. However, after learning all the cool ways that twitter can be used to
engage and encourage students I am going to get familiar with it. It was so rad
to see teachers being so excited to share their students work and to see
students having another outlet to share their hard work on. I realized today
that I need to remember that technology is not always a source of
negativity. In fact, when I took the
time to look there were so many positive outlets I have been missing and so
much good information. Getting to leave
a comment on Lucie’s writing seemed strange at first, writing to a child I have
never met nor probably will meet. Yet, I realized how excited I would have been
if it had written a short story as a child and someone far away from me had
taking the time to read and comment on it.
This lesson gave me fresh eyes into a world I had written off as harsh
and negative.

First of all, great use of the word rad :) Your post just voiced many of my feelings about social media as well; it takes too long to figure out and I usually see it as a negative thing. Thanks for writing!
ReplyDeleteThe amazing positive things that are happening because of the Internet do get overshadowed by the negative stuff the media reports to us. Yes...with every tool there is a positive and negative site...it's how you decide to use that tool that determines the outcome. I'm glad you enjoyed commenting on a students blog...it's pretty amazing how we can touch the life of a child a half a world away and never know the impact you might have had.
ReplyDeleteAbbi, you took the words right out of my mouth! I love how many ways we can incorporate social media in positive ways, but I find the idea of having to learn all of the ins and outs of new social media a little daunting, especially when everything becomes obsolete in 18 months or less. But, I want to use these as vehicles to spread positive information in a sea of negativity.
