I would consider myself pretty “techie,” but I got schooled
today! WOW! I wish I knew those google search tricks as an undergrad, and even
for some of our other classes. I found it rather interesting how great of a
resource Wikipedia is compared to more antiquated resources. I really liked how
Wikipedia can be a means of having students write and share content. This
creates a sense of pride with students, and creates a sense of responsibility. Throughout my entire academic career, I was
told that Wikipedia is not reliable and credible source. I assumed that
Wikipedia did not have a “rubric” grading system for articles, that was fascinating.
I think a lot of teachers do not realize that Wikipedia is always being edited, the content is always under scrutiny. Something as simple as a Wikipage about the Mariners (Go Jays! ;) ) is constantly being updated and graded for accuracy. Everything I learned this morning was the
antithesis of what I learned in school. As future teachers, we must think outside
of the box when it comes to technology. I had a lot of misconceptions about Wikipedia
and google, my perspective has been changed forever!!!!!!!
P.S. I loved the comment about teachers are "facilitators" is so 1990s! So rad!

So true! It is so easy to get stuck in the routine of teaching what our teachers have taught us exactly the way they did, but it is crucial to remember that the world is such a different place now. It is constantly changing and evolving and as teachers we have to keep up with that in order to connect with our students!
ReplyDeleteLooks like we both had the same mindset from the start Evan. I was never shown these tips in undergrad. Would have made searching for my projects a lot easier. It was also very cool to hear about the time and effort that goes into Wikipedia. I remember when Wikipedia was considered a very taboo website. But as our group talked about, Wikipedia has become a "living encyclopedia." Also, great picture by the way!
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you, Wikipedia is such a fun and new way for students to write and share content that they are learning about. Thinking outside of the box is such an important concept for teachers to learn in order to teach students in an effective way that they will learn. Technology is one of the biggest concepts teachers need to learn about how to be flexible.
ReplyDeleteI'm right with you, Evan. I was also interesting in the piece about having kids edit a Wikipedia page. That could be applied in so many ways! I can see this working for research paper assignments, too. Editing the page might make them very proud of their work.
