#awholenewworld
Twitter was but a flutter grazing my ear,
never did I think I would hold it dear.
A community of hearts, followed by minds,
virtual hands extended in space, in time;
where sharing is caring and hashtags roam free
to link our goals, successes, and dreams.

A Picture Speaks a Thousand Words
As a future
kindergarten teacher
visual literacy
is my jam...

My comment on #comment4kids

I like the poem and the photos! How elementary ed of you :D Also the Delorean is a nice touch. Is there anyway that you can think of that you would use twitter in a Kindergarten classroom? I'm sure there are ways, but I would imagine most (if not all) of the posting would have to be done by you? Thoughts?
ReplyDeleteThank you! Great question. I would use twitter as an idea bank for different ways of teaching and learning in my classroom. At #kinderchat I noticed there was a lot of resources for lessons and information about best practices for kinder learning. Furthermore, as a community, our kinder classroom can share some of our work in that public domain. They still have an ability to be excited and driven by the fact that their work will be part of a world wide community. While I would control the actual posting, I would be but the scribe for their ideas and discoveries.
DeleteLove the mixed media response Lisa, I think you did a great job of illustrating what we were exploring as future teachers! How do you think you could incorporate Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook with your students? I know we can use it as a resource as teachers, but do you think you can use these with your students? I'm trying to think about primary elementary, media, and student voice.
ReplyDeleteThanks Carleigh. I appreciate your questions regarding use of social media in my future kinder classroom. I do not know how much of Instagram and Facebook I will incorporate into my classroom. Maybe I would use them to talk about multicultural and inclusive education. We could look at people, groups, communities like Special Books by Special People. We could also work as a community to make "pen pals" through Facebook and initiate discussions about the larger community we are a part of. I would utilize Twitter mostly for information and practices to incorporate into my classroom. I would also use it to share out our work and discoveries. I would be a scribe and they would be the voice and action of the posts.
DeleteLisa, your poem and picture dialogue captivates the passion I know you have for teaching. As I re-read the poem I caught all the media vocabulary and was doubly impressed. Your ability to reflect on one prompt with three different expressions (poem, sentence and pictures) is your differentiation skills shining through! How could you use images (from flickr, google, etc.) for your students to learn, respond and create within your lessons?
ReplyDeleteThanks Bethany. In Kindergarten we use visual literacy at every turn. Children in the early literacy stage actually read from pictures and memorization of the narrative. I would use images from the different sources you mention to attach them to their written and verbal names. This allows children to start attaching the picture meaning to the word they hear and see. I will also provide them with opportunities to create their own pictures to match letters and letter sounds.
