Technology is everywhere! Let's use it!

The SAMR model was something I had never heard about, but once I started breaking it down and thinking of examples for each of the levels: substitution, augmentation, modification, and redefinition it was much easier to understand. I found this model to be very helpful in planning a lesson and making sure it's making its way through the different levels. The google doc with the template that we can use to write a good lesson plan that covers each level, can be very helpful. When I think of using this in my second grade classroom, I am thinking of one of the videos I watched earlier which was focused on having students read a book, focus on a character, use five words to describe the character, and upload a creative piece of artwork/video/picture to Seesaw for their classroom to see and give each other feedback. This was all done through an iPad. Although, I don't think the teacher was able to reach the redefinition level in the SAMR model, I would modify this lesson plan and add more to it to make it fit under the redefinition level. I would want to contact other teachers through social media from another part of the world that would be interested in collaborating with my students and I. Through our collaboration I would want for the students to interact with each other through Skype and have a discussion about the different books they each have read. As well as having them share their work that has been uploaded to Seesaw and build community. Exposing my students to others from a different culture would help develop the idea that learning is not just happening in our school, state, or country, but also around the world. Using the different technology tools that I have available I can also help them see that there is so much potential for what we can do in our classroom. That in itself is exciting! Learning nowadays does not just have to be within four walls, there are so many students in different parts of the world that want to have a glimpse of what our students are doing in the US. So why not give my students the opportunity to learn from others?

  1. Suzet, when you say that learning doesn't just have to be within four walls, that is a great point. You sound like you will fearlessly use technology to break down outdated teaching methods!

I would suggest for future blog posts (or handouts for students even) that you break up the text a little bit more. You have some awesome examples sparked by your reflection on SAMR, but they get a little lost without line breaks, bullets, or headings (or whatever method of organization you prefer).

I love the question you end with: "Why not give my students the opportunity to learn from others?" This shows that you have enough humility to not try and be the only mentor your students need - which ironically will make you a fantastic mentor.

  2. I agree with you and Kaitlin. Learning should be happening everywhere and with technology it is possible. I also like the template and am excited to use it to plan lessons and make sure that I am using technology in my lessons to my best ability.
