Connection in our generation today is much different than the generation we grew up in, and even more different than our parents. Today connection is all based off the internet or web and social media. Learning about the different generations helped me connect the gaps between learning and teaching. The Millennial generation has known some life without technology and some life with growing technology. The new generation Delta has only ever known technology. They don't know change. This generation has the potential to change the world through technology and connection. They have full power to take a stand on anything they please and excel. Thinking about the devices throughout ones household and the ratio between devices to people amazed me. I asked my parents the same questions about devices and ratios we were asked in class, their response and total was much different. Their understanding of devices also was much different than mine as a Millennial. Finding this connection throughout devices in Delta and the generations to come will be a challenge, but I already feel like I have learned so much.
Expanding on the learning of Millennial's we were always told throughout school that Wikipedia was a website we were not allowed to use. This site is forever changing by the day, the hour, and even by the minute. After learning about how to use Wikipedia I will now use Wikipedia for my own research. This helped me learn new skills and tips that I didn't know before. I had no idea Wikipedia articles had a grade scale. I also didn't know that Wikipedia was the largest non profit company with only 8 employees. Once looking at the cites I am amazed at the information that is available for students, teachers or staff. This site I believe will change the way many Delta students learn and research!
I really enjoyed your reflection on the inner workings of how Wikipedia is run and basically their mission. It is really cool that a resource we have been trained not to use is actually a pretty important aspect of how we research. I think back to undergrad and how we would laugh if Wikipedia was brought up, and then they sort of dialed it back as claiming it to be a tertiary source to use with caution. Those notions still exist, but by actually handing out grades and peer-reviewed processes, there is validity in using Wikipedia.
ReplyDeleteAlso, your comments on potential generation Delta were very well thought out. It is amazing the stark difference between millennials and "generation Delta", and how they know nothing outside of the web. It is an interesting thing to think about!
Your reflection on the differences between generations was really thought-provoking. I think that even by recognizing that people from different generations are going to process information very differently is already a huge step in the right direction. It seems as if intergenerational conflict nearly always arises from one generation (typically the older one) expecting the other to act the exact same way they did. By accepting these differences, we can begin to see the strengths of the new generations, strengths which can bring some exciting new opportunities to education!
