Social media has established itself as one of the greatest tools for connecting people near and far. Calling on the phone and emails have become almost obsolete in comparison to social media such as Facebook and Twitter. As an educator, I want to allow my students to utilize these platforms in a productive way. Over the last few years, I have been able to communicate with a majority of my students in the Mt. Spokane marching band through a Facebook group, but often times posts don't make it to students in time due to how much data Facebook takes while it runs in the background so most people turn off notifications and log out or keep it closed for the most part. A new app that I have started using with the leadership team of the band is an app called Band. It functions like a hybrid between Facebook and the Remind text system. You do not need to keep the app running in the background to receive notifications, they pop up on your phone just like text messages, it is easy to coordinate schedule changes, make announcements, and the different groups allow for certain information to be communicated only to certain people in a timely manner. This transition to the Band app will protect private information for myself and the other educators involved with the band and provide fast and easy communication between the staff and the students.
