I've always heard the thought that it is better to be off the grid in reference to social media images in relation to public data. It's like the thought that no news is good news. Now I'm hearing that not having a presence can be just as bad as what you might possibly have out there. When did this change?
The thought that some kids would create a fake account as a teacher is crazy. I know that they don't really consider the ramifications of the kind of havoc this could wreak in someone's life. But to think that someone would intentionally wreck your image and standing is beyond me. I know false accusations and lies happen. It is just baffling how you can think that you are doing the right thing and yet it still comes back to bite you in the butt.
The biggest take away for me is that we need to protect ourselves by having these accounts. It doesn't matter whether or not we use them, we just need to have them so that we have a proper trail to prove innocence.
I agree -- I thought that really blew my mind. Unfortunately, cyber bullying happens, and it can happen to teachers, as well. I remember back in the Myspace days, some kids did that to a teacher they didn't like. I think there is a balance between going totally off the grid and being WAYYYYY too personal on social media, and it's important that we teachers dance that line like pros.
