Technology in the Classroom-
Wikipedia is actually good? When did this become okay? When I was in school I was told Wikipedia was bad and couldn't be trusted, what else was I incorrectly informed about. This morning I was brought to the realization that I don't really have any idea how to use the internet and that I have missed out on a wide variety of tools to more efficiently use online sources. It was fascinating to learn how Wikipedia can be used successfully and to lead to other sources. I also wish I would have known how to accurately search using google oh, say 15 years ago when I was in high school and in my undergrad. Being able to search quicker and site sources would have saved me hours when writing papers. I am glad that these tools are being introduced so I can come out of the stone age and help my future students become more efficient when using the internet and social media as a learning tool. It was great to just scratch the surface on ways to connect with students and develop ways to build community and get them excited to learn, using tools they are already have at their finger tips. By using technology we can also expand on our idea of the world and show them how to focus in on what other parts of the world are thinking. This will allow us more creativity when it comes to creating assignments and we can touch on more aspects when things can be broken up, such as viewing global warming from different lenses around the world. It is amazing to think how far we have come technologically since I was in school and then think what the future will hold not just for us as future educators but as a civilization as a whole.
Loved the comments about Wikipedia. I also have always been told Wikipedia is not a credible source. My senior year of high school they actually banned Wikipedia from being used on the school computers.
ReplyDeleteCody, I totally agree with you about wikipedia! I would want to use it, but somehow felt I could not trust the information I found there. I am so glad that myth has been debunked and that I now know how to verify the information. I love your Willy Wonka graphic! This is still one of my favorite classic kid movies.
