The future of education is going to be reliant on the knowledge economy. As the Covid-19 pandemic showed us, we must be able to provide technology and resources to students when they need them in flexible ways. The knowledge economy puts an emphasis on the skills students can learn, develop, and maintain. This moves away from the print literacy pyramid that's outdated and influenced education for decades. By looking at education this way, we can see how to apply technology and new methods in our classroom. The skills of the knowledge economy will come out in many content areas and not just STEM classrooms.
Social studies, for example, can give students critical thinking, reasoning, and evaluating skills that will help them make choices as they grow. These skills can be applied to almost any work, school, or life environment. By viewing skills as the way ahead, education can become more equitable by giving access to resources, technology, and other necessities based on a student's demographics.
