The one idea I liked best from the Small Significant Shifts For Stronger SEL was the creation of a class mission statement. One of my personal philosophies for education is that getting students to buy into their own education comes with giving them a sense of autonomy. Along with autonomy, students must be able to express their opinions and know that their contributions are valid. By creating a co-authored mission statement for my class, students can establish community culture and guidelines that bring their values to life.
A co-authored mission statement can be made up of a few bullet points or simply be a paragraph expressing the class' beliefs. This will give the students buy-in as its a document they created and can revisit. It would always be good to refer back to it whenever there are behavioral issues in class as well to hold students accountable.
