Diversity in the Classroom using Technology
Many students do not find certain content areas interesting, because they cannot relate to it. For example, a lot of history classes are just built around old dead white men, so many students do not find it very interesting. Being able to connect the content to their own lives and see how each of the areas affect their lives can make it much more interesting. Using poems, YouTube videos, documentaries, etc. to show diversity within a certain content area, while still teaching the students the content will make them much more engaged and motivated to learn. There are so many different ways to connect LGBTQ+, disabilities, African American, Native American, etc. to different content areas using different types of technology to show it. Having students interact with both their own and others' cultures will help introduce them into different worlds of knowledge that they would not get from simply reading a textbook. We need to stray away from using textbooks written about old dead white men and start using modern examples of diversity within different cultures!
