Media Literacy wasn't talked about in my high school seven to eight years ago. We were one of the first schools in Alaska to have one-to-one computers that students could take home with them all school year. Our school was the project of several tech grants and so we were swimming in more technology than we knew what to do with. The only time we talked about credible sources was when we were writing a research paper. These same conversations need to be happening about the information we are taking in from our screens. Teaching kids to ask the same questions that we ask when writing a research paper to their Instagram and news feeds are incredibly important.
What questions should you be asking to assess the reliability of your media? They include: Who is writing/producing this media? Is there any bias I can detect? Who is represented and who is not? How is the author trying to make the reader feel? What is the overall goal of the media?
I am excited to have these conversations in my classroom as technology has become a part of our everyday lives and is not going away. We need to give kids these tools to use as they consume the media around them.
