Constructivism creates knowledge

Constructivism suggests that learners create knowledge as they attempt to understand their experiences (Driscoll, 2000, p. 376). Connectivism is a very interesting topic that pertains very much to education. Children learn from their experience and this allows them to process what they learn and store it into their brain and keep it there for the long term. This teaches students in a better way than simply lecturing them and thinking that they are going to learn everything from what you just said. From the ted talk we saw this morning, it shows that students are not remembering everything they learn from school and therefore are not ready for college or the real world. I feel like this goes hand in hand with constructivism because instead of focusing on teaching children all of the content they should teach children through experiences and relate the materials to things that occur in the real world. In our fish bowl, we discussed that relating the material to different fields and areas can be beneficial for students to learn the material and be able to apply it to the real world.

The ISTE standards were incredibly interesting to read about. On the standards in regards to the students, I think the most interesting one is number 6, Creative Communicator. Not all students learn the same way and that can be one of the most beneficial ways to teach children if you use the different strategies that students learn to teach the other students who are not comprehending what they are learning. This can also aid in allowing student voice because it allows them to communicate the way that they learn in many different ways.

The ISTE standard that I thought was the most beneficial to me as an educator was number one, Learner. I think many teachers forget that they are still learning yet that is such a vital role. One of the things that stuck out to me while we were doing the fish bowl method was someone saying that the first year we are going to suck but because we are learners that we will learn how to make things better and how to teach them better. I have to remind myself that I do not know everything and will fail the first few times and that’s okay! Learning from my mistakes and adapting to the new situations being thrown my way or adapting to the new technology used in education will directly increase my ability to teach!

  1. I agree that students get the most education out of experiences! That's why making school interesting and innovative with technology is so important. We, as teachers, should show kids how much is out there for them to discover, because they have the ability to learn so much with the technology that sits in their pocket!
