SAMR and how to use it in a classroom

SAMR, stands for redefinition, modification, augmentation, and substitution. I never thought that there would be a model that was created to infuse technology into teaching and learning. This four-step model showed me that most of the ways that I would teach are in the redefinition stage. Redefinition is where technology allows for creation of new tasks. I plan on bringing technology into the classroom but I thought that just being in the redefinition stage would be enough to teach students. Little did I know that we have three more steps to go through in order to bring technology into the classroom in a way where tech will act as a direct substitute. I want to be able to bring technology into the classroom where the students will be taught how to explore and use technology in a new and innovative way.

One thing that I want to implement in my classroom is creating blogs where the students will communicate about things that they have learned today. I also think that having a blog will help students learn information that they may have missed during the day. I think that by using a blog it will only be in the beginning steps of the SAMR model. This is because it is the beginning of the children using technology, if we got more advanced by using a blog then we would begin to continue into further steps of the model.

  1. I think creating blogs would be a great idea!! You could use it to hit so many standards too! I think you could work in a lot of other technology opportunities with it too once they started to got the hang of it!

  2. Ellen, I agree with you in that I also would like to use blogs in my classroom. I think its a great way to get kids to write and read each others work. I also used this picture as a good way to help me understand SAMR!

  3. I really enjoy the idea of having students create blogs. I too struggled with the thinking that having students create a blog is only the beginning of the SAMR model. I love this illustration of the SAMR model to me it really clarifies the steps.
