SmartMusic

The SAMR model can easily be used in the music classroom to create new learning experiences using technology. However, it is a stretch to say we can truly redefine anything about what we do in a music classroom. (Based on my internet searches, and the lack of any examples of SAMR music lessons in the Coetail project page, it seems that other music educators feel the same way.)

[Sorry about the wonky formatting here - the alignment won't revert to flush-left.] Technology allows us to create, assess and experience music in cool ways, many of which are made possible by a great piece of technology called SmartMusic. SmartMusic is a powerful tool that allows students to get instantaneous detailed feedback on their performances. Feedback can either be given after a performance, or during. For example, if a student is playing a piece that is in the SmartMusic system, they could see the score on a screen that tracks their progress in real-time, as they play. That way they can see exactly what parts need work. This is much more efficient than having a teacher or peer have to listen to you and give feedback as you play.

If students have to demonstrated their ability and understanding of the music, SmartMusic can be a great way for a teacher to assess students without having to take time in class to listen to every student play their part. Instead, students can record themselves with this software in a practice room, at home, or anywhere that they have a recording device with this technology in it. This Modification of how I do assessment could potentially transform the way I run the classroom, although it wouldn't technically Redefine what I do. But it would certainly give me more hours in the day, and help me get a more data-rich understanding of my students' technical abilities.

  1. Steven, when I first heard about SmartMusic at the Research Colloquium I was shocked! What a great tool to utilize to make sure students are working on technical ability. I think back to my years playing clarinet and I think SmartMusic definitely would have improved my ability for runs and quick finger changes. This technology definitely redefines how a student can learn a piece of music! Great post!
