Social Media in the Classroom-
This idea of using social media in the classroom is one that scares me. Personally I have not been a big participant in social media outlets and often only see or hear on the news the horror stories that can be associated with them. Today opened my eyes to how these outlets can be used for good. It was really "rad" to see how teachers are using blogs and tweets or even instagram photos to connect with students on their level and create ways for them to participate in school work that interests them. It goes back to the saying, "if you can't beat them join them" and even though some of these media platforms might not be my favorite, if I can incorporate them in my lessons so students can have fun and makes them want to learn and think outside the box I feel it is my duty as an educator to provide those opportunities. I do feel if we incorporate them into a classroom setting it gives us an opportunity to teach kids how to properly use them and allows us to safely monitor how students interact with each other. Who knows maybe I too will come to enjoy these things, I mean if millions of people already do, what am I missing, I just need to keep an open mind!
Cody,
ReplyDeleteI think that it is great that you are willing to keep an open mind in terms of using social media in the classroom! Today in class, Jeff mentioned that we have heard horror stories about how posting things online can "go bad." This was true for me and it was really eye-opening to hear that posting student work online really cannot lead to bad outcomes. I think I need to keep your philosophy of "if you can't beat them, join them" in mind as we move forward in this process of becoming the next generation of educators.
